What is Book Buddies?
Book Buddies is a research-based, one-on-one tutorial program that supports reading instruction outside the classroom. It was developed by the University of Virginia and has received national recognition for its effectiveness. The program works in part because committed and trained volunteers provide individual instruction and support to the emerging reader.
Students who work with a Book Buddies tutor throughout the school year are far more likely to read at grade level. Children are learning to read until the 3rd grade. By 4th grade, they are reading to learn.
What does a Book Buddies tutor do?
Book Buddies tutors work with the same student twice a week for 45 minutes to an hour within the school building.
What are the sessions like?
Each session follows a four-part lesson comprised of:
- reading familiar material
- word study
- writing for sounds
- introduction of new reading materials
The Book Buddies site coordinator carefully crafts an individual lesson plan for each child. The Book Buddies tutor is not required to do any lesson plans or pre-session preparations.
Are there any requirements to be a volunteer?
While there are no educational requirements to be a Book Buddies tutor, each volunteer is required to pass a criminal background check through the school system. Volunteers are also asked to commit to the year-long program.
What schools need volunteers?
Volunteers are needed at every elementary school in Danville Public Schools and Pittsylvania County Schools.
