Volunteers Needed for Book Buddies

DANVILLE and PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY -Danville and Pittsylvania
County schools need caring adults to serve as Book Buddies volunteers. The Book
Buddies reading program is a research-based, one-on-one tutorial program that
supports reading instruction outside the classroom.

The program was developed by the University of Virginia and
has received national recognition for its effectiveness. Volunteers work with
the same student twice a week for forty-five minutes. Last year, almost all
students enrolled in the program showed signs of improvement.

"A child is learning to read until third grade and reading to learn by fourth which is why it is so
important that all children in Danville and Pittsylvania County learn to read
at grade level," said Ann Vandervliet Stratton, Smart Beginnings Danville
Pittsylvania Executive Director.

"He used to not even like to read," said a Danville parent. "After working with his Book Buddies volunteer, he now loves to read. He really picked it up. Just to hear my son
say that he loves to read really makes me smile."
