DANVILLE and PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY - Smart Beginnings Danville Pittsylvania and United Way of Danville-Pittsylvania County will be hosting a kickoff event for Dolly Parton's "Imagination Library" program on Thursday, February 28, 2013, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Cardinal Village in Danville.

Mayor Sherman Saunders will read stories and the Averett Cougar will be present. Free hotdogs, popcorn, and drinks for families with preschool age children will be available. All children under five will receive a free hardback book.

The Imagination Library provides children with new, high-quality and age-appropriate books, at the rate of one book per month, from the time they are born until their fifth birthday. If enrolled at birth, the program enables children to build a 60-volume set of books over the course of their participation. There is no cost or obligation to participate in the program. Enrollment is open to any preschool child, age birth to five, living in the City of Danville or Pittsylvania County.

"The Imagination Library will provide families with in-home access to high quality books. We want parents and caretakers to read to children every day. Early exposure to language is an easy way to ensure that a child is ready to read by kindergarten," said Smart Beginnings Executive Director Ann Vandervliet Stratton.

Enrollment cards are also available at any Pittsylvania County or City of Danville library.
