Free parenting program provides education, relieves stress
DANVILLE and PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY - Smart Beginnings Danville Pittsylvania is sponsoring the Incredible Years, a parent education program. The Incredible Years is open to parents or caregivers living in Danville or Pittsylvania County who are caring for children ages 3-6. Participants meet once a week and learn how to address real-life parenting issues, such as tantrums, difficulty sleeping, and misbehavior.
Classes begin the week of January 15. Participants may enroll at one of four sites. Sessions are as follows: Grove Park Preschool, Tuesdays from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.; Southside Elementary School, Tuesdays, from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.; Head Start in the City or County, Wednesdays, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Call 797-8887 for more information or to register. Space is limited. Childcare and a light meal or snack are provided at no charge at most sites. Some incentives will be offered throughout the 18 week session.
"The Incredible Years program helps parents to connect with children through play, set clear limits and consequences, and build a child's self-esteem," said Ann Vandervliet Stratton, executive director of Smart Beginnings Danville Pittsylvania.
"After completing the course, participants should experience less stress, develop the ability to enjoy parenting, have less arguing in the home, find more ways to talk to their children, and develop problem- solving skills," Stratton adds.
