Smart Beginnings Danville Pittsylvania hosted a roundtable discussion on early childhood education led by U.S. Senator Mark Warner during a visit to Danville on Thursday, January 23. Warner received a tour of the star-rated Families First Child Development Center on Gray Street by director Michelle Pittman. Warner took time to read Henry Goes to Kindergarten to the four year-old class before joining Smart Beginnings board members and community leaders in a discussion of the issues facing of early childhood development in Virginia. Smart Beginnings executive director Ann Vandervliet Stratton framed the discussion with an overview of the organization's mission, the Virginia Star Quality Rating system, and the importance of developing effective and sustainable strategies that are not dependent on grant funding.
